Important Things to know
Knit Fabric Guide:
When it comes to knits, an inch of stretch does matter:
Some say size doesn't matter. When you are working with knits, the amount of stretch surely matters. So let’s break out our rulers to test the stretch of our knits.
There are several different ways people test the stretch of their knits. Some say to fold the knit in half to accurately test the stretch. Others say to only test the stretch in the middle of a yard of fabric. Then there are some that say, 3, 4, 5, etc. inches of a test strip piece of fabric. Well, I guess I am one of those 3, 4, 5, etc gals.
Important fact, please be sure to never test the stretch along the selvage. The selvage is often stiff and you will not get an accurate test stretch. When testing stretch from a yard of fabric, make sure you test at least 6” from the selvage.
I have created this awesome knit fabric stretch guide for you to download and print. The pattern is layered with two options. You may select the "color scale" or "black/grey scale" for a more printer friendly version. Laminate the ruler, fold it in half then be sure to place it into your purse/wallet for when you are shopping. How nifty is that??
